How to Use a Derma Roller to Get Rid of Acne Scars and Marks

When it comes to keeping a youthful skin, not everyone can afford to get surgery for permanent results. Again, not all skin types can withstand chemical exfoliation. That’s where derma rolling comes in. One can buy and use derma roller at home to keep their skin looking young.

First, let’s get clear here. What is derma rolling?

Dermarolling is a skin needling procedure where a small roller fitted with micro-needles make tiny injuries skin. These micro-wounds trigger the skin’s natural healing process.

As a result, the skin produces new elastin and collagen. These are essential proteins in the maintenance of a firm and radiant skin.

Generally, it is skin experts like dermatologists who give microneedling treatments. Unfortunately, the procedures and follow-ups can be expensive and time-consuming. On the other hand, it’s possible to use a dermaroller at home and get great results.

Let’s see the procedure of dermarolling at home for fast and satisfying results.

1) Disinfect the Derma Roller

Once you have bought your roller, it is not safe for use yet. You need to sterilize it to avoid skin infections. Basically, you need to sanitise your device every time before using it.

So, simply soak the roller head in 70% rubbing alcohol since it doesn’t evaporate as fast as 90% alcohol. In case you don’t have the alcohol, you can soak the device in hydrogen peroxide an all shall be well.

Once you have submerged the needles, let the device remain in that condition for about 10 minutes. After that, pull the derma roller out the solution and allow it to air dry.

2) Clean and Disinfect the Skin

As the derma roller soaks in the solution, you should be preparing your skin too for the process. First, wash the face or any other part you want to treat in some warm water.

Also, you may use a gentle foaming cleanser to clean the face. For other parts of the body, you can use water and shower gel. The main goal is to have a clean surface before using the derma roller.

If you intend to use a device with needles longer than 0.5 mm, you should disinfect the skin using 70% rubbing alcohol.

3) Apply Some Numbing Cream

Even with the top quality dermaroller, the effect of hundreds of needles puncturing your skin may feel uncomfortable. Actually, needles length longer than 0.5 may feel a bit painful.

Therefore, you need to apply some numbing cream on the skin before treatment. For better effects of the cream, apply it some 20 minutes before the session starts. You can check the recommended numbing cream for tattoos or derma rolling.

Again, if you use numbing cream on your skin, make sure you to follow the instructions given by the cream manufacturers. Finally, rub the excess cream before you start the process.

4) Be Systematic in Dermarolling

For you to correctly use derma roller at home, you need to be orderly. This ensures that you precisely treat all areas. The primary determinant of dermarolling results is the technique you apply. Therefore, you should be thorough in your treatment.

First, divide the area to be treated into small abstract sections. For example, if it is the face, you can divide it into cheeks, forehead, the chin, around the eyes and the nose. You don’t need to mark the areas, but visualise them in your mind. This way, the process becomes easy with small achievable objectives.

Next, derma roll each section completely before moving to the next. Start with the vertical movement of the roller on the surface. Lift the roller instead of pushing it back and forth. This reduces cases of track marks on the skin.

As you manipulate the device with one hand, let the other one pull the skin tight. This makes the device move with ease across the surface. After rolling on the same place for about 8 times, slightly adjust the position of the device until the whole section is covered.

Once you are through with dermarolling vertically on one section, repeat the process but now in a horizontal direction. Once you have finished, move to another section of the skin and repeat the process.

Contrary to common belief, you should not derma roll diagonally. Doing so would lead to uneven patterns and a lot of stress to the centre of each section. If you are using derma rollers with long needles, you need to give skin about 4 weeks to heal. For shorter needles, you can use them every other day.

5) Clean Yourself Up

After the procedure, you need to rinse your face with water. This will remove any trace of blood if any. Once you have finished, follow up with basic skincare procedures.

That means you shouldn’t use any chemical exfoliates. Also, don’t use products that contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Again, avoid applying makeups for at least 6 hours.

6) Clean and Disinfect Your Derma Roller

After the session, you need to clean your dermaroller before storing it. First, vigorously swish the derma roller in warm soapy water. You can use your ordinary dishwasher soap. Then, rinse it under warm running water to get rid of the soap.

Finally, you need to disinfect the device once more before storing it. Observing high standard of hygiene prevents infections as you use derma roller at home.

Therefore, soak your dermaroller in fresh 70% alcohol solution for about 10 minutes. This should kill any traces of bacteria and leave your device safe for future use.

After soaking the device, let it air dry before you can put it back in its storage case. Do not towel-dry it or else; you will damage your device’s needles and leave them with towel debris.

Conclusion

Derma roller benefits may take about two or three treatments before they become visible. But the reality is that dermarolling at home saves you a lot of time and cash.

You do not have to be an expert to use a derma roller. All you need is a suitable device and then follow the instructions. As you plan to derma roll, observe high levels of cleanliness.

Again, if your skin has active acne or any other skin infection, please seek treatment before you start derma rolling. If you use a derma roller on infected skin, you risk spreading the germs to other parts on your skin. Finally, never share your dermaroller, it is a personal item.
